Timișoara – Temeswar in German – was European Capital of Culture in 2023 and is regarded as one of Romania's most cosmopolitan cities. Baroque squares, splendid Art Nouveau façades and a vibrant cultural life define the centre of this city in the Banat region.

We walk across Victory Square with the opera house and the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, on to the baroque Union Square. Along the way I tell you about the city's three cultures – and about 1989, when the Romanian revolution began right here.
